The muscle pump is thought by many to hold the missing links between the act of lifting weights and the stimulation of muscle hypertrophy or myotrophy, or the increase in the size of a tissue caused by an increase in the size of its constituent cells. Myotrophy refers to the hypertrophy of skeletal muscle tissue. Relatively speaking, the less effective a particular exercise modality is at generating a pump, the less effective it tends to be at stimulating myotrophy. When you exercise, blood flow to the working muscle tissue increases, which is known as reactive hyperemia. The higher the exercises’ intensity level the greater the hyperemic response. If you don’t give your muscles many opportunities to rest during your workout, then they become engorged, or “pumped”, with blood. The accumulation of blood in working muscle is not the only factor involved in stimulating myotrophy. The problem that Infinite Lab’s new product MASSPORT™ solves can be illustrated by considering what happens to your biceps during a workout involving numerous sets and reps of barbell curls, for instance.
